Geography/Topography
The Canadian Shield is home to some of Canada’s most beautiful scenery. It covers most of the following areas: Ontario, Quebec, Northern Manitoba, Nunavut and Eastern North-West Territories. Because the land mass is so vast, the topography and geography are varied. The Western parts of the Shield (Manitoba and West Ontario) have been eroded over hundreds of millions of years so that the area has a relatively low relief made up of flat plains and gently rolling hills. You can see for miles. The Eastern Shield is also relatively flat, but is punctuated by several mountain ranges. The Laurentians, the Otish Mountains and the Torngat Mountains are some of the famous ranges. These Mountains have some of the best ski resorts in Canada including Mont. Tremblant in Quebec. Although flat, the North has a very rugged terrain, shaped by glaciers millions of years ago. The Canadian Shield is composed of a complicated pattern of beautiful lakes and rivers. These lakes are a perfect way to spend a family vacation or getaway.
